한국교육종단연구는 2005년에 시작해 현재에 이르고 있다. 한국교육종단연구는 2005년 중학교 1학년 6,908명을 2020년까지 조사한 2005 코호트와 2013년 초등학교 5학년 7,324명을 2030년까지 조사하는 2013 코호트로 구성되어 있다. 두 코호트는 10년의 시 차가 되도록 설계되어 각 코호트 내에서 학생의 성장, 상급학교 진학, 직업 획득 등을 분석할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 두 코호트 간 즉, 10년간 학생들의 차이를 비교᭼분석할 수 있다. 한국교육종단연구는 이처럼 종단적으로 수집된 자료를 토대로 교육정책 관련 기초 자료를 제공함과 동시에 심층 분석, 학술대회 등을 통해 정책적 대안을 모색해 오고 있다.
